Mark Jay paints what the North Devon Journal call "fantastically bold, audaciously confident watercolours." In a direct, high risk approach, he works quickly on a large scale, adding to large strokes of colour with compressed charcoal. They capture the movement and colour of weather passing over the North Devon landscape. Living in the Taw Valley, he paints what's around him: "If you're looking at something every day you get to know where the lines are, and you get to know the structure of where you live in every light" he says, adding "I consider myself a good colourist but a shockingly bad draughtsman. If I could actually draw I'd be much happier with my work."
